EYELINER FACEOFF: FENTY 'FLYLINER' V. KAT VON D 'TATTOO' V. STILA 'STAY ALL DAY'

Oh my goodnesssssSsss

Today's post has been a WORK. IN. PROGRESS. lemme tell you. I could give you a short blurb why or I could just get into the post. Let's just get into it. Today I'm comparing three very similar mid-range eyeliners:

Kat von D Tattoo Liner

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eye Liner

and Fenty Beauty Flyliner (new!)

As you can see, these liners are all felt/brush tipped and they're all fairly equal in tip length.

My go-to for years and years (seriously. repurchase after repurchase) was Stila's Stay All Day. If you look back on old Beautymunson posts you'll see just how much I used it. I eventually replaced it with Kat von D's Tattoo liner because of how quickly the Stila one dried out. I've been gung-ho on the KVD liner for years now but with the recent anti-vaxx debacle and the societal cancellation of her brand, I was curious what else was out there. Around the same time, Fenty Beauty dropped their Flyliner. The idea for this blog post was then born.

Each product is very black, for sure. That being said, these were all BRAND. NEW. liners and I was very confused by the Kat Von D swatches. That is a liner I have been using for a long time up until today and it's never been that translucent before-- I can only assume the batch I received is off or the formula changed? It was translucent when I applied it on the eye, too.

As for the Stila and Fenty liners, they were pretty even. Fenty's was super duper inky, though. I consider that a positive. Stila's, on the other hand, is more like a felt-tipped thin marker.

Please pardon the inconsistency in the lighting of the "test run" photos. I clearly took them on different days and it's been rainy and dark this weekend/week!

Starting with Kat von D's Tattoo eyeliner-- again, it was not opaque upon first application but you can easily layer up two or three layers to get a deep black. What I personally dislike about the Tattoo eyeliner is the Satin finish but many of you may find that to be a good thing! It brings a little bit of life into your eye look. The Tattoo liner applicator is different than the other two in that it is more of a brush than a felt tip and I think that helps with its longevity. Tattoo liner lasts significantly longer than the other two-- giving you a better value. (of course this is assuming for the Fenty liner but I can already tell it'll act similarly to the Stila option)

Next is the Stila Stay All Day liquid eyeliner. This one is black, opaque and extremely easy to use. The only downside is the life of the product itself. It does dry out but will still give you months of solid performance. I really like how sharp the tip is because it makes it very simple to draw out a perfect wing. They even have a MICRO tip Stay All Day if you want an even more precise application.

Last up is the product that I am currently conducting the hype train for-- the Fenty Beauty Flyliner. It's SO dark and opaque and applies beautifully. It's as if the product just flows into a line on your eyelid. I was nervous when I purchased because a lot of the reviews state that it transfers but I assumed correctly when I assumed it wouldn't be a problem for me because my lids don't usually have transfer issues.

All three of the eyeliners are good. I appreciate that they aren't thick or clumpy and don't flake. I like this style of liner pen because it saves your lashes from getting all goopy right before applying mascara.

Now, I have a question. Have you "cancelled" Kat von D? If so, what product(s) have you had to find replacements for? If not, let me know what your favorite eyeliner is! It doesn't have to be in pen form like these. Have a great day and I'll talk to ya in the comments.

MAKEUP OF THE DAY - 7/16/15

A different eyeliner technique! !! !!!! !!!!!!! !!

I'm obsessed. I wanted to wear a thicker liner today but didn't want to look too intense so I was playing around with ideas and came up with this technique! I used my Stila liquid liner to define the outer wing and to line the rest of my lash line verrrrrrry thinly. Then I took my blackest eyeshadow by Urban Decay and a short bristled shadow brush and thickened up the wing while keeping the look soft and faded it towards the center of my lid.

This could have gone either way but I LOVED it and will totally be wearing this out for the next couple of days.

Products used:
Eyes
Urban Decay eyeshadow in 'Straycat'
Stila Stay All Day liquid liner
Urban Decay eyeshadow in 'Blackout'
L'Oreal Miss Manga Rock mascara
Brows - Urban Decay eyeshadow in 'Secret Service' (Excuse the non-groomed hairs)

Face
Benefit The Porefessional primer
Maybelline Instant Age Rewind concealer in 'Fair'
MAC Studio Sculpt Defining Powder in 'Delicates'
MAC blush in 'Melba'

HOW-TO: WINGED LINER USING LIQUID EYELINER

Hey hi hi hi hellooo!! After much mental planning I am so happy to be posting about this finally! I recorded a video a few days ago on how to apply winged eyeliner using liquid eyeliner and I wanted to post about it as well. I never like when the bloggers that I read turn to YouTube and entirely stop making posts — I click on your post on Bloglovin' to see a post! Not a video :)

That being said, if you'd prefer the video format then scroll to the bottom of this post to see it!

I've had a lot of people ask me about makeup and how to do this or that but nothing has been a more popular question than "how do you do your eyeliner???" even though I don't even wear that outrageous of eyeliner ever! So there's the inspiration. Here are all of my steps:

Step 1: Bare Eyes!
I used Urban Decay's 'Tease' in the crease for a little definition. Adding that little bit of depth really elevated your winged liner look and makes everything look cohesive! Keep in mind this is only if you're not wearing your liner with an eyeshadow look already (which I usually am!)

Step 2: Basic Line
I consider this step to be the 'dirty work' because it's the part that really takes no skill and just needs to be done. Drawing this basic, thin line on your lash line initially will help you get the color where you need it to be without having to focus on angles or straight lines and perfecting your liner. I start mid-lid and bring the line out and then go back and fill in the inner corner. ALWAYS use small, short strokes! Even the most skilled makeup artists should never do their eyeliner in one fell swoop.

Step 3: Straight Angled Line
Okay now a little bit of skill starts seeping into the look. To get the right angle with your liner, flip your eyeliner pen backwards so that the tip of the pen will be forming the outermost portion of your wing. Envision your eyebrows extending a bit further than they naturally do and swipe your line up in that direction in a straight line, connecting to your base line from Step 2. Typically, the steeper the angle of the line, the thicker the eyeliner. Not always but that is how you would do it!

Step 4: Connect Angled Line to Base Line
Now make a small pie piece with the liner and connect this second line to your base line as well! This is where you are going to really decide on the thickness of your eyeliner. If you want it to be very thick, connect it further in toward your inner corner. The closer in, the thicker!

Step 5:  Thicken Up Line
Typically after Step 4 I am left with a bit of an 'L' shape so I go through once more and straighten everything out. Follow the shape of your natural contour, or crease, on this. If you see the definition of my crease you'll see that I have very round eye sockets so I am going to keep the shape of my eyeliner on the lash line rounded to mirror it.

Step 6: Mirror Liner to Other Eye
This step may prove the trickiest to people because matching your first line to your second line IS hard! However, the important thing is to look at yourself straight-on in a mirror and duplicate your angle from Step 3 with your straight line. Getting that right will almost 100% ensure that your liner will APPEAR even. You may not get the thickness to match exactly but it'll blend away with the rest of your makeup and will be less noticeable.

Step 7: Mascara
Slap on some mascara and your eye look is complete!

I hope there was at least one tip in this post/video that helped you or at least taught you something new about liner. I would love to continue this with both gel and power liners as well! I may also continue with more How-To's in other aspects of beauty. This was super fun!

Until next time,

MAKEUP OF THE DAY: 01/05/14

Today's makeup look drew inspiration from the earrings that I'm wearing in the photo above and below this writing. My mom got me them for Christmas and they are so incredibly chic I just can't get over it. I almost feel like I'm not worthy of wearing them.. I LOVE them. I had intended on the eyeshadow on this look being a bit more noticeable in photos but hey, what can you do? Urban Decay's 'Provocateur' is a really interesting shade and wears oddly so it's very difficult to pick up on camera. It's almost a bit gritty but never appears so. It's weird.

On another note, I've been really loving my eyebrows lately. I've only started loving them even more now that I'm using Gimme Brow. I am very proud of them! What I'm not proud of is my skin… uggghhhh I don't know what's going on with my skin but I cannot seem to get a handle on it. It doesn't help that I'm physically incapable of applying concealer properly because I don't end up concealing ANYTHING. I'm also paper white and no face products come in my skin tone which is why I had to use my Smashbox Photo Ready BB Cream because it makes me tanner but even then I couldn't conceal for the life of me… okay my blabbering is over. But yeah. I photoshopped the blemishes out in these photos but in the video below you'll be able to see it :(

Star of the show is my Maybelline ColorSensational Vivids lipstick in 'Vivid Rose'. I had originally put on my NARS Sheer lipstick in 'Dolce Vita' (it's in the video) but I looked so boring so I had to throw this guy on.

Urban Decay eyeshadow 'Provocateur'
